Augustinas Savickas, a Lithuanian painter, researcher in fine arts and professor, was born on 12 May 1919 in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father Jurgis Savickis was a Lithuanian writer and diplomat and his mother Ida Trakiner – a medical practitioner born in St Petersburg, in a Jewish family.
In 1939, Augustinas Savickas gratuated from Gymnasium No 3 in Kaunas and entered the Kaunas Art School. Studied at the Faculty of Sociology of Geneva University in Switzerland.
During 1945-1949, studied at and graduated from Vilnius Art Institute.
During 1951-1972, he lectured at Vilnius Art Institute, Associate Professor (since 1965).
During 1985-1993, he worked in the capasaty of Professor of the Deparment of Painting at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
In 1988, was elected a member by correspondence of the Academy of Arts of the USSR.
In 1994, Augustinas Savickas was conferred the Cross of the Knith of the 5th Class Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.
In 1999, his works were awarded the National Culture and Art Premium.
In 2003, he was awarded the premium of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association and Gold Bagde No 009 and was conferred the Cross of Commander of the Order of Vytautas the Great.
Augustinas Savickas died on 24 June 2012 and is buried in Vilnius at Kairėnai cemetery.
The artist organized more than 50 personal exhibitions and took part in over 90 group exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. He wrote and published four books and two albums in the Lithuanian, Russian and English languages.
