In this circa 1937-38 photo provided by the International Center of Photography, an emigration applicant meets with a representative of the Hilfsverein der Deutschen Juden (Aid Society of German Jews) on Ludendorffstrasse in the Schoeneberg area of Berlin. This image is part of a large archive of Roman Vishniac’s work that the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has begun to digitally share with the International Center of Photography. Vishniac was a Russian-born Jew who immigrated to Berlin in 1920. As an avid photographer, he documented the ominous rise of Nazi power and its effect on everyday Jewish life in Central and Eastern Europe.
